This project is featured in chapter 5 of Coding and the Arts. In it, students generate a track using AI to use with their own music.
Resources
As I mentioned in the book, the tools for AI music are part of a frequently changing landscape. I’ll do my best to keep an up-to-date list here.
- Musenet - The actual tool is kinda hidden in the middle of this article, but it’s worth digging out. Pick a musician, starting song, and instruments and it’ll generate a tune that can be downloaded in lots of formats, including WAV and MIDI. This tool uses the first notes of the song you pick to seed a longer AI composotion in the style of your selected musician.
- Humtap - Only available on iOS, this app takes a pretty neat and performance-oriented approach to AI music composition. As the name suggests, you just hum and/or tap into the app to provide input for the AI to generate a tune for you.
- Computoser - Not the prettiest tool around, but what Computoser lacks in aesthetics it more than makes up for in ease of use. Just check boxes for the mood, tempo, various style options, and you’re off to the races. Compositions can be downloaded as MP3, MIDI, or MusicXML.
